How are commissioned artworks developed?

I'm going to tell you a little about my process of creating commissioned paintings.

Drawing for the development of a commissioned artwork by Dennis Esteves

For many artists this can be a delicate subject, after all, following someone else's guidance in your creative process can be uncomfortable and repress artistic freedom.

For me, Dennis Esteves, developing an exclusive and personalized project ends up being a great challenge to overcome!

It all starts with a conversation to understand the desires and emotions that the person would like to see on the canvas, so that my artist's mind can begin to sculpt the composition possibilities in a completely natural and spontaneous way. Many times, even while I'm talking to the person, I can already start to build my mental painting!

Many people want to portray a family moment, others a special moment in their career or profession, and at this point it is worth making it very clear that the work of art will be done in a stylized way, so that my characteristic lines, colors and figures will be the tools used to develop the work of art.

The next step is to define the dimensions of the canvas, so that I can develop a sketch with the previously discussed theme and so that the person becomes aware of the value of their investment. The best part is that we have total freedom to work in the desired dimensions, thus being able to adjust the painting to configure the environment in the best possible way and according to the investor's wishes and available budget. So if you want me to paint a 40 x 30 cm painting, or a fresco on your wall with a 5 meter high ceiling, there will be no impediment.

Once the investor agrees on the value of the commission, it is time to start working on the layout of the artwork. At this point, it is necessary to raise 50% of the project value, as this is probably the most laborious phase, where ideas begin to take shape on paper. I will present a drawing on the defined theme and I will let the client feel free to give their suggestions and opinions, as I believe this is the time to make any changes or alterations. It is important that the investor already knows my art, because even if they ask for certain colors and tones of their preference to predominate, the sketch will not have a color study, and it is necessary to trust the color composition that I will work on, as this freedom is essential for the development of a commissioned artwork of my authorship. Up to this point, this entire process can take from 15 days to 3 months. It will depend on the complexity, quantity of elements, and flow of dialogue between the artist and the investor, and from the moment of approval of the sketch, there will be another 30 days for painting the oil on canvas. So, if you are planning to have the artwork ready for Christmas dinner or for a loved one's birthday, it is important to take into account the execution time and the artist's schedule, which may be busy.

Please be aware that full payment for your artwork must be made as soon as it is ready to be shipped to your address. Canvases up to 80 x 80 cm in size are shipped free of charge throughout Brazil, but other sizes require specialized transportation, and additional shipping costs must be anticipated and can be disclosed in advance when signing the contract. Your artwork will have a certificate of authenticity with a catalog number, which will be an important document to endorse this important investment in an asset that can increase in value in the medium and long term.
